Grapes of Wrath Movie

John Steinbeck's classic 1939 novel, The Grapes of Wrath, explores the struggles of displaced mid-western farmers during the Great Depression. Due to Steinbeck's ability to illustrate the complexities of American economic hardship, his novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. It also caught the attention of Hollywood production companies. In 1940, The Grapes of Wrath movie was released by 20th Century Fox. The movie follows the Joad family as they make their way from Oklahoma to California on their search for a better life. Like many families during that time, the Joads followed Historic Route 66, stopping to camp along the way. The movie includes their various interactions, focusing on the importance of family.

This classic film featured many talented individuals from the film industry and received critical acclaim. The novel was adapted for the screen and written by Nunnally Johnson. Directed by John Ford, The Grapes of Wrath movie seems to truly catch the desperation of the Dust Bowl era. Its gritty cinematography earned Ford an Academy Award for Best Director in 1941. The cast of the movie included Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, Jane Darwell as Ma Joad, and John Carradine as Casy, a former man of the cloth. For her performance as a strong matriarch, Darwell received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the film. The Grapes of Wrath was also nominated for an additional five Academy Awards. Due to its historical and cultural significance, The Grapes of Wrath was included in the United States National Film Registry in 1989.
